Solar Company Went Out of Business: What to Do
If your solar company goes out of business, identify which company closed and which separate agreements remain active. Preserve records, verify any new servicer independently, and ask about unfinished work or warranty support. A closure does not by itself establish that your loan, lease, or PPA has ended.

If a solar company closes, identify which agreement it held and verify the current installer, owner, lender, servicer and warranty contact separately. A closure notice does not automatically terminate a loan or transfer every obligation to another company.
Identify exactly who closed
The salesperson’s employer, installation contractor, financing company, system owner, and equipment manufacturer may be different businesses. Compare legal names on the contracts and recent notices. A disconnected phone number does not establish a bankruptcy filing or loan discharge. Save reliable closure notices and avoid relying on unsolicited callers claiming to be the replacement company.
Make a system and account inventory
Record whether installation is complete, the system is authorized to operate, monitoring works, and any repairs are outstanding. Download accessible production data and account statements. Keep equipment model numbers, warranty documents, permits, and prior service tickets together. This packet helps a replacement service provider understand what exists without depending on the former installer’s portal.
Request help from the remaining parties
Ask the lender about its account status and any process for incomplete projects. Ask the manufacturer whether a warranty claim can be handled through another qualified provider. For leased equipment, identify the current owner and service contact before commissioning repairs. Get any new cost, service scope, or account transfer in writing before sharing payment information.
Treat insolvency notices as time-sensitive
If you receive a bankruptcy or receivership notice, preserve the case information and any claim deadline. Include the notice and any claim deadline in your qualification assessment. Solar EXIT IQ does not provide legal advice or legal representation. Do not assume a general consumer complaint preserves a court deadline. Be cautious about anyone demanding an upfront payment for a guaranteed cancellation or refund after the company closes.
How do you verify a successor or support route?
| Role | Evidence to locate | Question |
|---|---|---|
| Installer | Executed scope and official closure notice | Who handles incomplete work or installation warranty? |
| Lender / servicer | Current statement and written servicing notice | Where are account records and payments handled? |
| Equipment owner | Lease/PPA and assignment notice | Who confirms service and transfer conditions? |
| Manufacturer | Serial number and warranty certificate | Is component coverage registered and transferable? |
A notice naming a successor is a starting point. Verify that it covers your account and role, and use an official contact source rather than a number supplied by an unsolicited caller. The directory below records provider notices, not a verified outcome for an individual customer.

| Name / role | Documented route and limitation | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| Sunrun Solar provider; agreement-specific owner/service role | Home-sale transfer: use the official portal and confirm buyer/escrow information, agreement acceptance, effective date and final invoice. This process is provider-specific. | Official service-transfer guide |
| GoodLeap Financing / account provider; match your executed entity | Account documents and billing: the official FAQ describes downloading agreements/statements through GoodLeap Home and contacting support when documents are missing. Confirm the product and legal entity on your own account. | Official customer FAQ |
| Sunnova / SunStrong transition Official closure notice; account-specific successor verification needed | Sunnova’s notice says it ceased independent operations and identifies SunStrong servicing for acquired in-service accounts; certain in-progress installation assistance is described separately. Confirm whether your account is included using official written communications. | Official closure and support notice |
Inclusion does not mean endorsement, a finding of misconduct or a verified remedy for your account. If a notice names a successor, request written confirmation identifying your specific agreement. Editorial and correction policy

Frequently asked questions
Do I still owe a separate lender?
Do not assume the balance disappears. Ask the lender for account documentation and individual review of your circumstances.
Can a warranty survive the installer closing?
A manufacturer’s warranty may be separate from an installer’s workmanship promise. Check each warranty’s provider, terms, and claim process.
