Solar Contract Dispute: Organize Your Next Steps

A solar contract dispute is a disagreement about what was promised, authorized, delivered, billed, or required under an agreement. Start by identifying the specific obligation in question, preserving evidence, and sending a focused written request to the responsible company. A dispute does not automatically suspend payments or deadlines.

Organize a solar contract dispute into specific issues, matching evidence and written requests to the responsible party. Track notice deadlines, agency submissions and court matters separately; a complaint does not itself establish cancellation or suspend obligations.

Turn a broad complaint into specific issues

Separate a missed completion date from a production shortfall, financing error, or sales statement. For each issue, record the promise, where it appears, what actually happened, and the requested correction. If a promise was oral, identify the speaker, approximate date, and any contemporaneous messages. State uncertainty honestly instead of presenting an assumption as a fact.

Direct the request to the right party

The installer may handle workmanship, the lender may handle account balances, and a manufacturer may handle a component warranty. A retailer or sales organization may be separate from all three. Use the notice and complaint addresses in the relevant documents and save each case number. Ask a company that denies responsibility to explain who it believes is responsible and why.

Track responses and proposed remedies

Maintain a simple log of the date, recipient, delivery proof, response, and next action. Compare any offer against the unresolved issues. A service visit does not necessarily settle a billing disagreement. An account credit does not necessarily resolve roof damage. Ask for deadlines and written scope when a company proposes a repair, refund, or revised agreement.

Escalate based on the problem

A state consumer protection office can be a reporting route for sales concerns; a contractor regulator may address licensing or workmanship; the CFPB complaint process may be relevant to a financial product issue. Agency complaints do not determine individual remedies or suspend procedural deadlines. Keep copies of submissions and responses, and include any deadlines in your qualification assessment. Review arbitration and court notices promptly with qualified counsel.

Which complaint recipient fits the documented issue?

Complaint-routing questions

Loan balance, funding or disclosures Lender/servicer and CFPB complaint process Financial complaint is not proof of loan closure
Installation or licensing Contractor and relevant state licensing regulator Agency jurisdiction varies by state and work
Sales representations Business and state consumer-protection office Describe allegations factually; do not imply a finding
Utility billing / interconnection Utility and appropriate utility regulator Contractor oversight and utility oversight differ

What if the companies each blame the other?

Request each position in writing and identify the contractual role and document cited. Keep a shared chronology and a separate unresolved-question list for each party.

    Your next-step checklist

    1. Write one factual paragraph for each disputed issue.
    2. Attach the contract page and evidence supporting that issue.
    3. Request a specific response or correction in writing.
    4. Keep a single dated log across all companies.
    5. Escalate unresolved matters through the appropriate channel.

    Frequently asked questions

Should I send the same complaint to every company?

Tailor each request to that company’s role. Keep a consistent timeline, but identify the action you need from each recipient.

Does a complaint guarantee a refund?

No. A complaint communicates the problem and may prompt review, but it does not establish an entitlement to a particular result.
