A solar cooling-off period is a limited opportunity to cancel a covered transaction after signing. It is not a universal deadline for every solar agreement. Check the governing rule, transaction type, signed notice, and state requirements before counting days.

Understand the federal rule’s limits

The FTC describes a three-business-day right for certain sales at homes and other covered locations, with exclusions. Its guidance counts Saturday but excludes Sunday and federal holidays. Transactions entirely online or by telephone are among the exclusions it identifies. A state rule or contract may provide other rights, so one federal summary cannot determine every homeowner’s deadline.

Create a deadline worksheet

Write down the signature date, where the transaction occurred, when documents were received, and the rule or clause you are using. Copy any printed final cancellation date exactly. Note conflicting dates rather than silently choosing the later one. If the seller gave incomplete forms or you are unsure how the rule applies, preserve the evidence and include those details and any deadlines in your qualification assessment. Submission does not extend a deadline.

Do not confuse a later dispute with cooling-off

A claim involving defective work or misrepresentation raises different questions from a short no-reason cancellation window. Missing an initial period does not answer every possible remedy, but it also does not create a new automatic cancellation right. After installation, collect performance and service records and examine the relevant dispute terms. An assessment form submission does not stop the clock.

Your next-step checklist

  1. Locate the actual notice and applicable rule.
  2. Record sale location and document dates.
  3. Calculate using the correct definition of business day.
  4. Send notice through the accepted method promptly.
  5. Keep proof and identify any uncertainty in your qualification assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Does signing online always remove cancellation rights?

Not necessarily. The circumstances of the sale and state law matter; signing on a device does not by itself describe the whole transaction.

Can the provider give me more time?

It may agree to an extension or different terms. Obtain that agreement in writing rather than relying on an oral assurance.
