Solar Contract Cancellation Before Installation: What to Check

Before installation, check your cancellation rights immediately and ask the provider to confirm the status of work, orders, and financing. The absence of panels does not necessarily mean no obligations exist. A timely notice and a complete written response are more useful than a verbal promise to put the project on hold.

Find out what has actually happened

Ask whether a site survey, design, permit application, equipment order, lender disbursement, or scheduling commitment has occurred. Request dates and supporting records for claimed costs. Distinguish a temporary pause from cancellation; a paused project may still have a live agreement. Keep the sales proposal and every change order so you can identify the approved scope.

Address deposits and claimed expenses

If the provider says a deposit is nonrefundable or a fee is due, request the exact provision and an itemized calculation. The fact that a clause exists does not resolve whether it applies or is enforceable in your circumstances. Do not accept a charge solely because a salesperson calls it standard. Preserve the request for individual review if disputed.

Close the financing loop

Ask any lender whether the loan is approved, executed, funded, or partially disbursed. Notify it of the cancellation request and ask what documents it requires from you or the installer. Request written confirmation of remaining balances and any funding reversal. A provider’s internal project status screen does not establish the lender’s account status.

Your next-step checklist

  1. Check the notice deadline before discussing scheduling.
  2. Request a written project and funding status.
  3. Send the applicable cancellation notice.
  4. Ask for deposit and fee calculations.
  5. Confirm closure with the provider and lender separately.

Frequently asked questions

Is a project hold the same as cancellation?

No. Ask whether the agreement remains active and whether charges or deadlines continue during the hold.

Can I cancel after permits are requested?

Possibly, depending on the contract and applicable rights. Permit activity alone does not determine the answer.
