Underperforming Solar Panels

A high electric bill does not by itself prove a system failure, and a working inverter does not prove the system met every representation. A useful review compares production, household consumption, utility billing and the promises or guarantees actually documented.

Measure production and usage separately

Export monthly production from the monitoring platform and collect utility statements covering periods before and after solar. Note changes in occupancy, electric vehicles, pools, heating or cooling. Utility bills show net purchases and credits; monitoring data shows system output.

Check system status and project completion

Record error codes, offline dates, inverter or battery status, visible damage, inspection completion and permission to operate. Do not climb on the roof or open electrical equipment. Use qualified technicians for safety and diagnosis.

Find the benchmark in writing

Locate the proposal’s estimated annual production and the contract’s performance or production guarantee, if any. They may not be the same. Read exclusions, measurement periods, notice deadlines and the stated remedy. Savings projections can also depend on future utility rates and usage.

Create a service record

Report faults through the required channel and save ticket numbers, dates, technician findings and photographs. Ask for the diagnosis and proposed repair in writing. Continue recording production during delays.

Connect performance to the agreement

Performance evidence may support repair, warranty, billing or other discussions, but it does not automatically cancel financing. Review installer closure options, sales claims and the broad exit guide.

Match the concern to its evidence

For workmanship use installation milestone records; for cost/production use matched-period bill and energy comparisons; for a disconnected system use utility approval records. Bring dated photos, error messages and the actual warranty scope.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my electric bill still high after solar?

Possible factors include household usage, utility rate design, system size, weather, shading, equipment faults or billing configuration. Compare usage and production data before drawing a conclusion.

What if the monitoring app says zero production?

Record screenshots and error messages, then follow the provider or manufacturer service process. Use a qualified technician for electrical work.

Does low production cancel my loan?

Not automatically. Financing and performance duties may be in different agreements, and the available response depends on the documents and law.

How much history should I collect?

A full year is useful when available because solar output and usage are seasonal, but urgent failures should be reported immediately.
