Solar Contract Cancellation in Texas

Texas solar cancellation depends in part on when the agreement was signed and whether it falls under the residential solar retailer law. TDLR describes a five-business-day written cancellation provision for covered agreements under requirements effective September 1, 2025. Older contracts and excluded transactions need separate analysis.

Check the contract date and statutory coverage

TDLR’s current guidance describes required cancellation dates and notice addresses for covered sales and leases. It also describes provisions addressing accompanying loans from affiliated or referred lenders. Do not apply those requirements to every historical solar loan without checking coverage. Save the agreement date and exact cancellation wording, and include any disputed applicability in your qualification assessment.

Keep the Texas regulatory timeline in view

TDLR identifies additional registration requirements beginning September 1, 2026. Its guidance also notes temporary enforcement treatment for specified administrative rules. Check the live agency guidance when making a complaint, since a registration issue and a private cancellation right are different questions. Record what rule and transaction date your concern actually involves.

Separate retailer, electrical contractor and utility

The company that sold the system may not be the electrical contractor performing the work. Record both names and identify who is handling permits and interconnection. Ask for the utility’s actual approval status rather than accepting an installer’s general statement that the job is done. Keep photos and inspection records for incomplete or defective work.

Ask for a documented resolution across agreements

When requesting cancellation, ask the retailer and any lender to confirm their respective next steps, final balances, and funding treatment. For a later dispute, explain the specific sales, installation, or payment problem and the remedy requested. Include a rejected notice or proposed settlement in your qualification assessment. An agency complaint does not by itself end the contract.

Which Texas effective date applies to the concern?

TDLR distinguishes contract and cancellation provisions effective September 1, 2025 from retailer/salesperson registration effective September 1, 2026. Its current notice temporarily suspends enforcement of administrative rules §71.41 and §71.43 until November 1, 2026; that notice does not itself establish that every statutory cancellation provision is suspended.

For covered agreements, TDLR describes a fifth-business-day written cancellation provision and accompanying-loan language for affiliated or referred third-party lenders. Check agreement coverage and date before applying those requirements to an older or unrelated loan.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Texas cancellation period always three days?

No. TDLR describes a five-business-day provision for covered agreements under the newer law. Verify the transaction date and coverage.

Does the newer law automatically cancel an older loan?

Do not assume retroactive coverage. Have the contract date, lender relationship, and applicable provisions reviewed individually.
