Solar Tax Credit Sales Promises: What to Verify

A solar tax-credit sales promise is not a determination of your tax eligibility or a guarantee of cash to pay a loan. Verify the rules for the relevant installation year and your circumstances with a qualified tax professional. Preserve the sales explanation if it affected your decision.

Check a solar tax-credit sales claim against the transaction date, installation records, system ownership and current IRS instructions. A historical sales promise is not a determination of current eligibility or a guaranteed refund.

Record exactly what was promised

Distinguish a statement about potential eligibility from a promise that everyone receives a check or can make a loan prepayment. Save the advertisement, proposal, texts, and payment illustration. Record the year the system was installed or placed in service as relevant, ownership structure, and who was expected to claim any incentive. Do not use a current-year summary to decide a different tax year.

Connect the promise to the payment schedule

Identify any expected lump sum and what happens if it is not paid. Ask the lender for the original and current schedules. A tax question and a loan disclosure question are related but distinct: a tax professional addresses eligibility, while the lender explains account terms. Document the dollar effect of the mismatch without assuming it proves a particular legal remedy.

Verify current rules through the IRS

As checked on September 18, 2026, the IRS states that the Residential Clean Energy Credit is unavailable for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Earlier eligible installations and unused credit carryforwards involve different questions. Older sales brochures may no longer describe the applicable rule. Use the IRS guidance linked below and ask about your actual year, ownership, expenses, and tax situation. If correcting a return or addressing a notice is necessary, use qualified tax assistance. Solar EXIT IQ does not provide tax advice or promise a credit.

How should historical promises and current rules be separated?

The current IRS Form 5695 instructions state that residential clean energy credits cannot be claimed for expenditures made after December 31, 2025. This is distinct from questions about an earlier qualifying project, an unused credit or how a loan prepayment was represented. Ask a qualified tax professional to apply the current instructions to your facts.

Tax-claim evidence packet
Record What it helps establish
Dated sales proposal or message What was represented at the time
Ownership and executed agreement Who owns the equipment and what was financed
Installation and completion records Dates relevant to the tax question
Loan schedule Whether a prepayment assumption affected later payments

Illustrative scenario: an older loan schedule expected a principal prepayment, while a later salesperson describes a tax benefit as guaranteed cash. Preserve the statement date and ask separate tax and lender questions; do not assume a refund will arrive by the loan deadline.

Your next-step checklist

  1. Save the original incentive claim and proposal date.
  2. Record ownership and relevant installation dates.
  3. Identify any loan prepayment assumption.
  4. Verify applicable IRS guidance with a tax professional.
  5. Present a documented sales or financing discrepancy for review.

Keep state contract questions separate

Federal tax eligibility is a different question from a contract notice or consumer complaint in your state. If the sales claim also raises a contract question, use the state-specific contract resources to organize the relevant records. Those guides do not change the federal tax rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rely on a salesperson to determine my credit?

No. A sales explanation does not establish tax eligibility. Verify the applicable rules and your circumstances independently.

Does missing an expected credit automatically cancel financing?

No automatic result should be assumed. Review the loan terms and the specific representation with qualified professionals.
