Solar Contract Cancellation Fees: Questions to Ask

A claimed solar cancellation fee should be checked against the signed agreement, applicable cancellation rights, and the work actually performed. Request the clause and an itemized calculation. A quoted fee is not proof that you owe it, and refusing it does not by itself resolve the dispute.

Separate the kinds of charges

A company may describe design expenses, permit costs, restocking, unpaid work, or a fixed termination amount as a cancellation fee. Ask which category each charge falls into and whether a deposit is already being applied. Check for duplicate items. If equipment was ordered, ask whether it was delivered, returned, or used elsewhere and how that affects the calculation.

Compare timing and contract language

Record when cancellation was requested relative to signing, design approval, funding, and installation. Identify whether the demand concerns a statutory cancellation, a contract termination provision, or a negotiated exit. These are different situations. A general cost checklist cannot determine enforceability or applicable legal limits. Include the proposed charges and supporting documents in your qualification assessment for an informational review.

Do not pay for an ambiguous release

If you are considering a settlement amount, ask whether it ends all provider claims, closes the loan, addresses deposits, and covers equipment or property obligations. Confirm the recipient and payment timing. A receipt for a fee may prove payment without proving a complete release. Keep a copy of the signed resolution and later account statements.

Your next-step checklist

  1. Request the exact contractual basis for each charge.
  2. Ask for itemized costs and supporting dates.
  3. Check credits for deposits or returned equipment.
  4. Compare the demand with the cancellation circumstances.
  5. Review the proposed release before agreeing to payment.

Frequently asked questions

Are all solar cancellation fees illegal?

No blanket answer applies. The transaction, agreement, timing, and law determine whether a specific charge is valid.

Should I accept a discounted fee immediately?

First confirm what the payment resolves. A smaller amount may still leave financing or other obligations outstanding.
