The difference between DIY solar contract cancellation and hiring a service is who does the work, how it is organized and what authority the provider has. Free research leaves preparation and follow-up with you. Guided DIY adds software structure. Full Support can take on agreed administrative tasks. Legal advice and representation are a separate professional service.
Choosing assistance does not create a right to end a solar agreement. First identify the result you need: records, a repair response, a corrected account, a transfer proposal or review of possible cancellation. Then compare the work involved with the responsibilities you can realistically manage.
- 01Identify the issue
- 02List the work
- 03Choose your support
- 04Verify written scope
Compare who prepares, sends and follows up
| Responsibility | Free DIY | Guided DIY | Full Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research and records | You collect and organize | You supply records in a structured workspace | You supply records; team assists within scope |
| Letters | You draft and check | Prefilled reviewed templates; you verify | Assisted preparation as authorized |
| Sending and follow-up | You handle both | You print, sign, send and track | Coordination or fulfillment only within signed authority |
| Legal decisions | Your decision with qualified advice as needed | No legal representation | No Solar EXIT IQ legal representation |
Treat this as a task list rather than a ranking. An independent homeowner may prefer control. Someone who cannot manage repeated document requests may value hands-on assistance. Neither preference predicts the provider’s response.
Evaluate cost without confusing service fees with solar debt
There are several separate costs: your remaining solar obligations, any proposed buyout or transfer, the assistance you purchase, mailing and document expenses, and the time you spend. A service fee is not a payment to your lender unless a written arrangement expressly says so. Do not assume it reduces your loan balance.
Free information avoids purchasing a service, but it still requires time to verify addresses, gather evidence and follow up. Software may reduce repeated data entry; hands-on support may reduce administrative effort. Compare a written scope before deciding whether either offers value for your situation. Solar EXIT IQ discusses customer-specific terms privately and does not display service prices here.
Ask for a complete written scope
- What is included, and what work remains mine?
- Who prepares and sends correspondence, and who approves the final version?
- What are the service’s cancellation and refund terms?
- What support period and access period apply?
- What happens if the third party refuses the request or never responds?
Review Solar EXIT IQ’s service agreement and your customer-specific documents. Do not assume Full Support terms automatically govern a different DIY enrollment.
What Guided DIY changes in the workflow
The Guided DIY program is built around one licensed homeowner/household and one assigned solar agreement. Its dashboard, document center, workflow stages and correspondence records give related work a consistent home. Reviewed templates can populate printable drafts from case information, while the homeowner checks accuracy and chooses what to send.
You still review recipients, factual statements, attachments and delivery requirements. You print, sign and send letters, keep delivery proof and record responses. Technical/navigation support runs for 12 months from activation, while portal access runs for 24 months. Those are access terms, not a promised cancellation schedule. Case fulfillment and legal representation are not included.
When hands-on assistance may fit better
Consider Full Support when you want assistance keeping records complete, preparing factual communications and coordinating authorized administrative follow-up. That can be useful when multiple companies request different documents or your own schedule makes record management difficult.
You still provide accurate records, required signatures and decisions. Read the limits on customer authorization: administrative permission does not permit Solar EXIT IQ to settle claims, sign agreements for you or act as your lawyer. A provider’s mailing activity should be explicitly authorized and recorded.
When the next conversation should be with an attorney
A threatened lawsuit, formal collection deadline, disputed signature, requested release of claims or uncertainty about legal rights may require licensed legal assistance. A checklist cannot assess all of those consequences. The CFPB’s attorney-finding resource explains ways to look for help; ask about the scope of any engagement.
Timing also matters. The FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule guidance covers certain sales and has exceptions; it is not a cancellation right for every solar agreement. If a possible notice deadline is approaching, do not wait for software enrollment or a service consultation to investigate it.
A practical comparison using the same homeowner file
Illustrative example, not a customer result: a homeowner has a signed installation agreement, separate financing and unanswered messages about delayed work. Free DIY means assembling a timeline, reviewing each notice clause and drafting the inquiry independently. Guided DIY can organize the file and help prepare correspondence after activation. Full Support can assist with organization and approved communications within scope.
The financing still needs separate attention. The CFPB’s solar-loan consumer advisory identifies borrowing risks and routes for complaints; it does not establish that a particular homeowner’s loan has been canceled. No choice in this example changes a payment schedule or guarantees a response.
Prepare before comparing providers
- Collect every signed agreement and amendment, not just the sales proposal.
- Write a dated timeline and separate documented facts from assumptions.
- List upcoming notice, response and transaction dates.
- Decide which administrative tasks you can handle.
- Ask each provider for its exact responsibilities and limits in writing.
Use the contract review checklist for the file itself. For evaluating letter tools specifically, see the article on whether free letter templates are enough.
Frequently asked questions
Is hiring a service the same as hiring a lawyer?
No. Administrative assistance, software access and attorney representation are different services. Ask who is providing each service and which written engagement covers it.
Can Guided DIY send the letters for me?
No. The Guided DIY homeowner reviews, prints, signs, sends and follows up. Mailing by a provider belongs to a different service scope.
Does paying for assistance erase my solar balance?
No. Payment for assistance does not itself satisfy a solar loan or release another contract. Obtain and review any actual payoff, release or resolution documents.
Can I change support levels later?
Ask the team to review available options. A change requires its own agreed terms and authorization; do not assume an automatic upgrade or credit.
